Make the stop: school bus cameras for Middlesex County

A child holds up a hand with No Excuses written on the palm, in front of a school bus with its red stop arm out. Text: It's the law to stop from both directions when kids are getting on and off a school bus. Make the stop. Save a life.

Every school morning, buses stop on roads around Middlesex Centre where traffic moves fast and sightlines run long. Most drivers do the right thing and wait. Some don't, and when a car slides past a stopped bus with its lights flashing and its arm out, a child is the one at risk.

Ontario already gives municipalities the tool for this. Passing a stopped school bus is against the law, and a provincial regulation lets a municipality put cameras on the stop arms so the footage stands on its own in court, without a bus driver taking a day off work to testify.

So I've drafted a notice of motion for Middlesex County Council. It asks County staff to report back within 90 days on what a stop-arm camera program would really take here: the technology, the cost, how the fines cover it, and how tickets move through the courts. It also asks staff to sit down with the student transportation service, the health unit, the OPP, our neighbouring councils and the parent groups already doing this work, then send the resolution to our local MPPs.

Mayor of Middlesex Centre is also a seat at County Council, and this is exactly what that seat is for. I spent four years as a school board trustee thinking about how kids get to and from school. This one is simple. If you elect me in October, it's one of the first things I'll table.
