Real solutions to needed crosswalk and speed in front of oxbow

Eight years at the County table. Why can't Ilderton cross its own main street? #whycantmxc #whycantmc
By Sean Hunt, candidate for Mayor of Middlesex Centre · Oct 17, 2026
Ilderton turned 150 this year. Its two main streets still aren't ours. Ilderton Road is County Road 16, and Hyde Park Road is County Road 20. That one fact explains the story I keep hearing at the door.
This fall an Ilderton resident told me she'd tried to get a safer crossing near her home. The Municipality told her it was a County road. The County pointed her back to the Municipality. She got a runaround instead of a crossing.
She's not the only one. And the fix isn't a mystery.
The rules are clear. The follow-through isn't.
Since 2017, Middlesex County has had crosswalk guidelines for County roads running through our villages. The County installs pedestrian crossovers — the signed, flashing-light crossings where drivers must stop — using provincial standards. But County staff only start counting pedestrians and traffic once the local council sends a motion asking them to.
In other words, the road to a safe crossing in Ilderton runs straight through our own council chamber, and through Middlesex Centre's two seats at County Council. Residents deserve to know whether that motion has ever been sent for Ilderton, and what came of it.
What the record shows
• 2023: Middlesex Centre reported "many concerns" about the crosswalk at Heritage Drive on Hyde Park Road and about speeding into the village. The answer was streetscaping to make the road feel narrower.
• 2024: Delaware got a funded pedestrian crossover on Longwoods Road, about $95,000. Good for Delaware. That's what follow-through looks like.
• Today: The County lists seven Community Safety Zones, where speeding fines are higher. Two are on Ilderton Road, near Valleyview Public School in Coldstream and Poplar Hill Park. None is in Ilderton village, even though Oxbow Public School sits right on County Road 16.
• September 2026: County Council directed staff to begin writing a consistent policy for intersection controls on County roads.
• September 2026: Our Active Transportation Plan was adopted without the Ilderton Rail Trail extension and the Mill and Margaret Street sidewalks.
A fair question for our Deputy Mayor
John Brennan has represented Middlesex Centre at County Council since 2018 — two full terms — and chairs the County's Accessibility Advisory Committee. I respect that service.
But results are the test. A safe crossing is an accessibility issue as much as a traffic one: for seniors walking to the library, parents with strollers, and kids walking to Oxbow. After nearly eight years at the County table, Ilderton families are still asking for the same things.
So here's the question every voter should weigh: if the last eight years didn't deliver safe crossings for Ilderton, what will be different in the next four?
What I'll do as mayor
• Send the motion. In my first months, ask council to formally request County pedestrian counts and crossover assessments at the spots residents keep naming, including Heritage Drive and Stonefield at Hyde Park Road, King Street, Meredith and Willow Ridge at Ilderton Road, and the Oxbow school frontage.
• Ask for a Community Safety Zone at Oxbow Public School and in the heart of the village.
• Shape the new County policy. Make sure the County's intersection-control policy works for village main streets, not just rural crossroads.
• Bring our own data. Run an anonymized crosswalk-observation pilot at locations residents identify, so the warrant numbers exist before the County asks for them.
• One front door. Residents report a crossing concern once, to Middlesex Centre. We carry it to the County, track it, and report back. No more runaround.
The mayor sits at the County table. I'll be there prepared, with the data in hand. Every meeting. Every time.
